Zwift is without a doubt one of the best ways to stay motivated during this crisis. I know for a fact that If I didn’t have Zwift I definitely would not be able to run the distance that I do today. It is extremely effective at not only motivating you but also improving your fitness, cardio, and stamina.

It is so effective that it has even been quoted by several different authorities as “robo doping” because of just how good it works.

All the more reason why it is “all the rage” nowadays.

You can do a little bit of research and you’ll see that there are already a number of individuals praising Zwift and everything that it brings to the table. However, there are still some individuals out there hesitant to give the program a try.

And, this is many because they either don’t have a clue what it is or just simply don’t know where to start.Well, do not let that deter you because it is a wonderful opportunity that could come backed with tons of potential benefits.

What Is Zwift?

When you hear the term Zwift, you should think of a turbo trainer game that enables you to link your turbo trainer to your computer, iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV. This lets you take your indoor cycling efforts to a whole new level.

You’ll actually feel like you are engaging in those outdoor environments again. It’ll help alleviate some of that tediousness and boredom from those traditional workouts that you are probably already growing dull too. However, Zwift does not just stop there. It is an interactive training program that wants to keep users excited and motivated along the way.

One of the ways it does exactly this is by allowing you to compete against other riders in Zwift races. Oh wait, it still doesn’t stop there. Just getting started and don’t know where to start? Maybe you aren’t looking to race, but just looking for a push or some guidance.

Don’t worry because all of that is available as well through the professional coaches section. That’s right, there is an entire section designed by professional training coaches that will help you take your workout to the next level, or help you get started being active. Whatever the situation is, you can complete these activities alone or you can complete them with other trainees rated at the same skill level for extra added motivation.

Does Zwift Work With Indoor Cycle Bikes?

While there are several things that you will need to get started zwifting, the most obvious is the turbo trainer or an indoor bike. A turbo trainer is a device that will connect right up to your existing exercise bike and allow you to complete a focused training session right in the comfort of your own home.

It doesn’t matter what kind of bike you have, you shouldn’t have a problem connecting it up with one of these devices. However, the endeavor might require removing the bike wheel and installing the turbo trainer. It really depends on what type of trainer you decide to go with. As for indoor cycles, spin bikes or stationary bikes, you are going to need a power meter or a speed sensor.

The speed sensor should be the fallback option, as it isn’t as accurate. For power meters, there are currently two options available on the market, but the best is without a doubt the pedal power meter.

You just twist them right on the pedals, which makes installation easier than ever. You can even take them off and use them on a different bike so a one-time investment will be a lifelong investment, even if you have to replace the bike. The other option is a crank-based power solution, which requires you to switch out the crankset on the bike. This can be a hassle and your easiest option by far are the pedal meters.

What Will I Need For My Exercise Bike To Work With Zwift?

Excited to get started? Who can blame you, but you’re in luck because doing so is easier than you’d imagine. That being said, there are a few things that you will be beforehand. The first being the Zwift software and a compatible device.

As you learned above, Zwift can be downloaded to modern smartphones, tablets, computers, and even smart TVs. Next, you are going to need a membership, which will come attached with a monthly membership fee of about $15. Now, this probably sounds like a drag, but do know that it is entirely possible to try to program 7 days for free before committing fully.

In addition to this, there is no minimum or maximum contract length, which means you can back out at any time you feel the need or desire to do so. You can cancel any time without any fear of extra added repercussions.

I Am A Runner, Will Zwift Work With Treadmills?

There is simply no denying that Zwift is great for cyclists, but runners shouldn’t feel left out because they can also take advantage of everything this interactive program has to offer right in the comfort of their home as well. Once again, there are several things that you will need in order to be able to do this though. The first and most obvious is a treadmill. That being said, Zwift will pretty much work with any type of treadmill currently available on the market. It doesn’t matter if it is a low dollar manual treadmill or that most technologically advanced model, you can connect it up with Zwift. And, this is because, in most setups, it is the foot pods that transmit your speed.

The treadmill itself has no direct connection to Zwift. That being said, there are some treadmills that do connect to the Zwift program directly, which allow for a better overall gaming experience. These Zwift compatible treadmills are called “smart treadmills”.

These models can be used without the foot pods and will send spend and cadence directly without the need for foot pods.

What Will I Need For My Treadmill To Work With Zwift?

So, you just learned above that you can utilize Zwift with any treadmill. It doesn’t matter if it is a new treadmill or an old one, you can connect it to Zwift. However, there is a catch. And, that catch is that, if you want to get 100 percent complete compatibility as well as the best experience possible, you are going to need a newer smart treadmill with Zwift capabilities as said above.

There are currently a number of them available on the market, and some of these are even reasonably affordable so you don’t have to worry about spending an arm and leg. Some models might even come with a free 6-month subscription which will help pay for itself. Because you are going to need a monthly Zwift subscription just like cyclists do.

That aside, if you already have a treadmill and want to connect it to Zwift, you will still need to make some additional purchases. The first being foot pods. These devices measure and broadcast your speed, cadence, and distance.

The newer smart treadmill models available on the market can even pair with Zwift via Bluetooth, which makes the entire endeavor easier. Some major disadvantages with these devices are that they are somewhat inaccurate when compared to the smart treadmills, and they will also need to be recalibrated if you change running shoes unless you somehow manage to attach them in the same position every time, which is highly unlikely.

Another thing to consider will be the battery life. If you forget to charge the device or go for longer than intended, you might end up cutting your routine shorter than planned. However, most newer models do offer exceptional battery life.
